A year long project of culture, connection, sustainable fashion and art
Originally initiated as a donation of 100 saris from the Kahini community—comprising Indian and Sri Lankan women based in Melbourne—to The Social Studio, this project evolved into a significant initiative focused on highlighting the diverse aspects of the migrant experience, exploring themes of identity, contributing to sustainable fashion practices and fostering opportunities for emerging creatives. Inter-generational community building and storytelling were also a core part of this project – to create greater understanding of the migrant experience then and now, and an opportunity for the current generation to connect over shared stories with the older “aunties” who donated the saris.
Kahini is a community organisation that uses art, partnerships, and collective engagement to address social issues. This partnership for the Sari Project with The Social Studio has been a perfect fit to understand and share the intergenerational migrant experience as well as create sustainable fashion with impact and a story.
The Social Studio is a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to leveraging fashion and creativity to provide employment and educational opportunities for refugees and new migrants in Melbourne.
